the little bang

This blog is a continuing stream of consciousness which keeps me amused, out of trouble, or at least minimally awake and is user friendly, cost effective, and may occasionally make one smile for no particular rhyme or reason.

I finished "Ten Big Ones" by Janet Evanovich. I thought that it was one of her better books. The ending seemed a little implausible, but that's OK. Obviously, the main character Stephanie isn't going to get hurt, but one would think that the guy with the machine gun would be hit. Then again, the Stephanie Plum books are more about comedy than tragedy and the book made me laugh quite a few times. Not many books can do that.

Las Vegas is an incredible place. It's become kind of guilty pleasure for me, because I enjoy going, but feel as though I shouldn't. There's the opportunity to be as good or as decadent as you want to be. I mostly just go to see a lot of shows and play a little video poker. In the five days that I was in Vegas, I think that I saw 8 different shows. The best were probably Blue Man Group, Second City, and Mystere; A Cirque du Soleil show. Interestingly, none of them had any nudity or off-color jokes. The level of entertainment has gone up where it isn't necessary for either. Although, I also liked Jubilee! at Bally's which was a more traditional Vegas show with the sinking of the Titanic and Samson & Delilah. It had a lot of topless dancers with fans and elaborate head gear. I was in the second row from the stage; close enough to feel the breeze from the showgirl's fans. I was a little worried that I would break my resolution not to drink alcohol. Thankfully, I remembered O'Douls which is non-alcoholic, but a fairly good imitation of real beer. Whoever formulated it should be given sainthood. That reminds me of Father Guido Sarducci from Saturday Night Live who once remarked that someone was being considered for sainthood, but that it was a little shaky because 2 out of 3 of his miracles involved card tricks. You meet a lot of shaky saints in Vegas.
