the little bang

This blog is a continuing stream of consciousness which keeps me amused, out of trouble, or at least minimally awake and is user friendly, cost effective, and may occasionally make one smile for no particular rhyme or reason.

Yesterday, I read the Time magazine article about whether it was necessary for Jesus the Christ to die on the cross for our sins. An interesting question, which they never really answered. The answer, I think, is yes and no. It was not required for Jesus to die in such a manner in order to atone for our sins. After all, he was the Son of God. He could have lived to be 100 years old and died peacefully in his sleep, and he would have still offered the same redemption to all who believed in him. God doesn't need our permission, or our advice, or our understanding to do his will. Jesus died on the cross, because that was what his Father wanted. The real message from God is how his son Jesus lived his life; not how he died. His violent, painful death was just to get our attention and to give mankind a symbol of faith. It is very easy to stand on a hillside and preach about loving thy enemies. It is a much higher degree of difficulty to be scourged to the edge of death, forced to carry a heavy cross up a hillside while being whipped, and nailed to the cross while one slowly drowns as the lungs fill with blood. Then, to say about his enemies, "Forgive them, Father, they know not what they do" is truly amazing. No one can say that he didn't feel our pain in life. No one can say that he didn't have faith in his own teachings. If Jesus had uttered even one word renouncing his beliefs while on the cross, it would have spread like wildfire from the witnesses throughout the countryside. The disciples would not have gone on to be faithful martyrs, if they had seen or heard any weakness in Jesus on that fateful day. Christianity would have been snuffed out like a candle in a whirlwind before it had a chance to even begin. Instead, He is Risen and the light is brilliantly beautiful to those who can see. Jesus was born to show us the way to live and he was crucified to show us the way to die. In essence, Jesus is the way. The only way.

I was right, Camille was out last night on "American Idol". I think that the two Hawaiians probably split the Hawaii vote. It's too bad bacause I thought that Camille had an interesting voice. She seemed to have problems controlling her emotions which affected her singing. With a lot of practice, I think that she could become a great performer.

I think that Camille may be out tonight on "American Idol". Last night was the second time that Simon said that it might be her last night. It's hard to believe, but people do listen to him. Perhaps it's a subconscious thing, but people don't vote to keep someone who has been trashed. The red-haired guy is probably in trouble, too. Frankly, none of them compare with Elton John who was the theme for the night. He sings great and plays piano. I think that I'd like to see his Vegas show. Too bad he's such a flake most of the time. It's incredible that he's still alive. Elton has shoveled more snow than a Chicago mayor during an election year, and he's still standing.

I can resist everything except temptation. Oscar Wilde

One of the lines from Lady Windermere's Fan playing at the Northlight Theater. No wonder Oscar Wilde is still frequently mentioned today. He seems like a pretty sharp, witty guy. The play was worth seeing. It's interesting to see the way that society has changed over the past 100 years. Some would say for the better, but I'm not so sure. Lady Windemere is almost caught in another man's apartment by her husband. Something that would have ruined her in London during that time period. She thougt her husband was having an affair with a disreputable woman and she considered leaving him. The woman was actually her mother who had disappeared years ago and wanted her secret kept. It was kind of refreshing to watch a play where things like morals, honesty, and manners were important to most people. Today everyone wants to be a character without actually having any character. I think Oscar would like that line.
