the little bang

This blog is a continuing stream of consciousness which keeps me amused, out of trouble, or at least minimally awake and is user friendly, cost effective, and may occasionally make one smile for no particular rhyme or reason.

I've started reading Hiroshima by John Hersey. It's really a fascinating book. I'm surprised that it isn't more well known. Perhaps it is in some circles, but it always escaped me. It's about the aftermath of the first atom bomb ever dropped on a city. Over one hundred thousand died and another one hundred thousand were injured; most of them civilians. The people described in the book are just ordinary people. Although, one is a doctor of a private hospital with rooms for thirty patients. It's amazing to think that many of the people who were not injured in the blast, felt shame for not having the same burden as the walking wounded. I still wonder what Harry Truman was thinking when he gave the order to use the bomb. I guess that's the subject for another book, but more and more he's becoming my least favorite president.
