the little bang

This blog is a continuing stream of consciousness which keeps me amused, out of trouble, or at least minimally awake and is user friendly, cost effective, and may occasionally make one smile for no particular rhyme or reason.

Suvivor has been just ok, so far. There are only two interesting people on the show. Rupert is almost like a real life pirate. He thinks like a pirate and is easily the stongest one of his tribe, although he looks out of shape. He seems to be the only one who knows how to catch fish with a spear. If these were real pirates, he'd definitely be the leader. Everyone else seems to be completely inept. There is also a guy who reminds me of a young Bob Dylan. He makes gestures and says things which only he seems to understand. When asked to explain himself, his explanation makes even less sense. I think that he has his own hidden stash of wine, because he appears a little loopy most of the time. There is also a woman who looked great in the shower won by her tribe in a reward challenge. I'd like to see more of her, no pun intended.

I don't believe in hexes or curses, but what is up with the Chicago Cubs. Leading three games to one with their two best pitchers scheduled to pitch at home in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, and they still find a way to lose. The last person in my family who would have had a chance to see the Cubs win the World Series was my grandfather born in 1895. He would have been only 13 in 1908 or 12 in 1907 when they won back to back. Katharine Hepburn would have been 1 year old the last time they won. Well, like someone once said, any team can have a bad century. Let's hope the Cubs don't turn it into 2 bad centuries.

Check out the links on the left-hand side of my blog. You might find something interesting such as the Nasa link which has some beautiful pictures of the universe. The picture changes every day.

Here is Moby Dick's Eplilogue. I always liked that someone survived, who else would tell the story? The coffin that pops-up from the sea is the one that the harpooner Queequeg had made after seeing a vision of his demise. All in all, a great ending to a classic book.

The Drama's Done. Why then here does any one step forth? - Because one did survive the wreck.

It so chanced, that after the Parsee's disappearance, I was he whom the Fates ordained to take the place of Ahab's bowsman, when that bowsman assumed the vacant post; the same, who, when on the last day the three men were tossed from out the rocking boat, was dropped astern. So. floating on the margin of the ensuing scene, and in full sight of it, when the half-spent suction of the sunk ship reached me, I was then, but slowly, drawn towards the closing vortex. When I reached it, it had subsided to a creamy pool. Round and round, then, and ever contracting towards the button-like black bubble at the axis of that slowly wheeling circle, like another ixion I did revolve. till gaining that vital centre, the black bubble upward burst; and now, liberated by reason of its cunning spring, and owing to its great buoyancy, rising with great force, the coffin like-buoy shot lengthwise from the sea, fell over, and floated by my side. Buoyed up by that coffin, for almost one whole day and night, I floated on a soft and dirge-like main. The unharming sharks, they glided by as if with padlocks on their mouths; the savage sea-hawks sailed with sheathed beaks. On the second day, a sail drew near, nearer, and picked me up at last. It was the devious-cruising Rachel, that in her retracing search after her missing children, only found another orphan.
