the little bang

This blog is a continuing stream of consciousness which keeps me amused, out of trouble, or at least minimally awake and is user friendly, cost effective, and may occasionally make one smile for no particular rhyme or reason.

Katharine Hepburn died on Sunday at the age of 96. She has always been my favorite actor; no one else is a close second. I think I first saw her on TV in the film "Holiday" when I was 9 or 10. I didn't know who she was until several years later, but I was captivated by her character. For some reason, I felt like she would understand me like few others. I became more and more of a fan as I grew older. I think that I've seen just about every movie she's made and have read several books about her including the books that she wrote. I was always impressed that she never dumbed down her characters, but made them intelligent with a sense of style and class. She seemed to live her life the same way. Today most actors in Hollywood do everything they can to win an Oscar. I love the fact that she didn't even attend the Academy Awards because that wasn't what acting meant to her. Even so, she was nominated twelve times and won four times. She also acted in numerous theatrical plays. Most film actors avoid the stage because the work is too hard for too little money, but how else can one learn the trade? Nicole Kidman is one of the few big film stars who still occasionally act on the stage. It's sad to think that there will probably never be another Hepburn. God rest her soul.
