I saw Bend it like Beckham on Sunday at a theater that only shows indie films. It was a great movie. It kind of reminded me of My Big Fat Greek Wedding in that it was centered on one family and the problems they encounter. In this case, it was about an Indian family living in England. The oldest daughter is getting married while the younger daughter is in high school and wants to play soccer. There's a lot of humor as the younger daughter tries to break from traditional roles. She even temporarily breaks up the wedding because she is seen by the fiancee's family kissing what looks like a white English boy, but is actually a short-haired team mate. Eventually the mother and father relent and allow her to accept a scholarship in America to play soccer.

There were quite a few interesting trailers shown before the movie. Indie films seem to be more interesting than a lot of the studio fare lately. They're based more on human emotions and real people rather than just special effects, explosions, car chases, and one-dimensional characters. I think that I'll be seeing a lot more of them in the future.

By the way, Bend it like Beckham refers to an English soccer star by the name of Beckham who is married to Posh Spice. The bend it part refers to his ability to put an arc on the trajectory of the ball making it harder to defend. He's famous throughout most of the world, but hardly known in the USA since we're not big fans of soccer. He was recently traded to Madrid which probably is a huge topic of discussion at pubs throughout Great Britain.
